The Importance of Vocational Collaboration
Social work is a profession with a wide range of domains. Therefore, it is necessary to cooperate with other disciplines while fulfilling the social work profession. In this sense, the social work profession should be in relation with fields such as psychology, sociology, medicine and psychiatry (Selcik; Güzel, 2016: 462). The fact that social work is in contact with these professions is mainly due to the fact that the applicants appeal to all these areas.
In addition to the social service needs of individuals coming to social service institutions and organizations, their needs in different fields can also arise. These needs may be directed to psychological, legal or medical areas. At this point, multidisciplinary studies are important.
The relationship of social work profession with other disciplines can be examined separately as follows (Sosyal Hizmet ve Diğer Bilim Dalları, 2018):
1-Relationship between Social Work and Psychology
Psychology and social work professions are different, but it is important to work in coordination with psychologists in social work. Because the disadvantageous problems experienced by the applicant may require psychological support.
Basically, social work and psychology are concerned with human behavior; but, psychology is directed towards areas such as individual characteristics and character analysis; social work profession The client's family and environment relations are directed towards areas such as using the resources of the society to meet the applicant's needs.
2-Social Work and Sociology Relationship
The common aspect of social work and sociology is that they are both interested in people. Sociology aims to examines the relationships of people with the question of how reveal social problems. However, the profession of social work shows the actions of the clients to solve the problems they have. In other words, social work is a more practical profession. As a result, these two disciplines can be complementary in theory and practice.
3.The Relationship Between Social Work and Psychiatry
The fields of social work and psychiatry are areas that need to work in coordination with each other. The number of applicants coming to social service institutions and organizations is likely to address both areas. In other words, the focus of both professions is individuals who are having problems with their personal or environment. The point separating the two professions; psychiatry profession deals with the medical treatment of the disease while the social work profession deals with problems and relationships. However, if the applicants who come to social service institutions have a psychiatric disease, being in cooperation with this profession is important for the effectiveness of the service provided.
4. Relationship between Social Services and Consultancy
Counseling can be in the field of family, education or improvement. Family counseling is an area where different professions can be trained in this area. Social work is included in these professions. In other words, subsequent to receiving family counseling training, social workers can also practice in this field. Educational counseling can contribute to the social work profession in the applicant school age.
5. Relationship Between Social Work and Medicine
Medical and social work professions are two very different occupations in terms of practice, but they have common points in terms of their needs. It is important that the applicants coming to social service institutions and organizations have a problem in the field of health and a collective study with medicine. It is also possible to add different sciences to all these professions. Since the social work profession usually works with disadvantaged groups, the area of application coincides with many occupational groups.
Working in cooperation with other professional groups is important in many respects while serving clients. Serving the services in a fast and systematic way, taking into account the best interests of the application, easier identification of problem areas, easier access to resources are some of them.
As a result, it is possible to say that the social work profession works in parallel with many disciplines. Therefore, working in collaboration with other sciences is important for the quality of the services offered.
