World Human Rights Day, subsequent to World War II, states have emerged as a concrete product of the steps they take in order to guarantee the rights and freedoms granted to individuals by taking a common stance. Universal Declaration of Human Rights prepared by the United Nation Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights in 1948 on the 10th of December 1948, when it was approved by the General Assembly, became the starting point of World Human Rights Day and this special day has been a common denominator of the concept of rights since then.
In this special day, which is of great importance in terms of social work profession and discipline, Istanbul Gelisim University School of Health Sciences Social Work Department organized a panel entitled ” World Human Rights Day: A Holistic Look at Human Rights“. Thanks to the panel, it is ensured that the related parties come together. Istanbul Family, Labor and Social Services Ministry Deputy Provincial Director Ali Fuat Karaman, Mehmet Ali Şahin who is working as Social Work Expert at Besiktas Municipality, Asst. Prof. Dr. Taner Artan who is a faculty member of Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Health Sciences Social Work Department, Fatih Kılıçarslan who is working as a Social Worker at Bakırköy Ord. Professor Dr. Mazhar Osman Mental Health and Neurological Diseases Training and Research Hospital participated in the panel as speakers.
In the first session of the panel, which was held on December 10, 2018 at Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Fine Arts Conference Hall, and was the moderator of Lecturer Betül Çolak, the topics of "Human Rights and Social Work" and "Children's Rights and Social Work" were discussed. Mehmet Ali Şahin who delivered his speech in the field of Human Rights and Social Work; The process of the emergence of the concept of human rights, the place of human rights in international legislation, the situation in our country on human rights at national level, prevention of violations of rights and studies that can be carried out at this point has drawn a general framework on human rights. Ali Fuat Karaman who took the right to speak in the field of Children's Rights and Social Work subsequent to Şahin; In our country, the situation of children's rights, problems as a result of violation of rights, neglect and abuse of children, neglect and abuse at the national level policies applied in the name of children, victims of neglect and abuse of the current models of service to children and the legal basis of these models have shared about the issues. Following the speeches, the first session of the panel was terminated and Head of Social Work Asst. Prof. Dr. Prof. Derya Kavgaoğlu presented a plaque to the speakers.
In the second session of the panel, which was moderated by the research assistant Ali Taşci, the topics such as "Elderly Rights and Social Work" and "Patient Rights and Social Work" were shared. Taner Artan who has the right to speak in the field of "Elderly Rights and Social Work", the process of emergence of elderly rights and the concept of elderly abuse, the problems faced by the elderly in daily life and their solutions, the strategies developed at the international and national level towards the increasing old age; the social policies that should be applied in order to be able to find a place in the life of the elderly and the importance field of the old age increased his thoughts and knowledge about the increase have shared about the issues. Subsequent to Taner Artan, Fatih Kılıçarslan who speaking about "Patient Rights and Social Service"; The process of emergence of the social work profession in hospitals, the emergence of the concept of patient rights, social work practices carried out in the patient rights unit in our country at the national level and the solutions that can be produced in order to increase the functionality of the service models being implemented have been shared.
Subsequent to the speeches, the panel was terminated and a plaque was presented to the speakers by Asst. Prof. Dr. A. Yüksel Barut who is director of School of Health Sciences.
