 Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Pediatric Rehabilitation

Istanbul Gelisim University Ergotherapy Department Hosted Pediatrıc Rehabilitatıon Specialist Huseyin Bol

Huseyin Bol from Turkish Spastic Children Foundation gave a seminar titled Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Pediatric Rehabilitation. The seminar  was organized by the Department of Ergotherapy at Istanbul Gelisim University School of Health Sciences. The seminar, held open to public, was attended by professors and students of Ergotherapy from Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Child Development department.

Hüseyin Bol pointed out the importance of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary studies on cerebral palsy and its treatment. He emphasized that Cerebral Palsy treatment cannot be accommodated in one session or hour, and that cooperation between the specialist and the family is also important. Providing information about the importance of early intervention, Hüseyin BOL's speech continued as follows:

Cerebral Palsy, which is one of the pediatric diseases, has a rate of 4.4 per thousand in our country. Professor Dr. As stated by Hıfzı Özcan in his book, 1 disabled person is born every 8 hours. For this reason, it is important to work together with expert staff in the rehabilitation of cerebral palsy in the light of developing technological opportunities and information. In this way, it will be more effective to provide trainings and complementary support for individuals and their parents.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY INTERVENTION

In contrast to previous periods, the participation of the baby, who is considered as risky by the specialist physician, to the habilitation process is discussed earlier. This early process makes the contribution to the individual and their parents more meaningful. In the early intervention program, our baby in the process of 0-5 months is called Precthl analysis and an evaluation is performed by computed tomography in accordance with 98%. In this evaluation, natural development indicators such as fluency, diversity and symmetry are expected. As a result of the evaluation process, we involve our baby in the habilitation process very quickly. In the habilitation process, approaches such as neurodevelopmental therapy methods, environmental regulations in the living areas of the baby, family information education, and psychological support for the family are presented.

CURRENT APPROACHES IN PEDIATRIC REHABILITATION

Neurodevelopmental therapy is mostly used in therapies. In addition, approaches such as ergotherapy, play therapy, technological (virtual reality, robot, video) rehabilitation, hydrotherapy, hypotherapy and osteopathy are the most popular applications. Environmental regulation with ergotherapy has an important place in the quality of life of the disabled person. Many life-facilitating arrangements can be planned such as the positioning of the individual (sleep, sitting, standing), and the apparatus design for eating-drinking functions. Everything in life is based on doing a lot of work with little energy. For people with disabilities, this possibility is possible with accurate assessment, therapy and environmental correction with assistive devices.

As a result, one-hand clap is not possible. If we start from this idea, it is essential that the fields of expertise are in communication.

Gülşah Kınalı, Head of Ergotherapy Department, School of Health Sciences, Istanbul Gelişim University, said the following about the event: Cerebral Palsy, also known as Cerebral Palsy, is a syndrome that is still emerging despite improved health and newborn care. Cerebral palsy is often a movement, muscle tone or postural disorder caused by damage to the developing brain before delivery. Cerebral Palsy can be accompanied by many different conditions. Therefore, cerebral palsy should be treated with a multidisciplinary approach. As the Department of Occupational Therapy at İstanbul Gelişim University, we organize an event that draws attention to Cerebral Palsy every year. In this context, Hüseyin Bol hafs seminar was full of practical and visual information. We thank him.
