 Water Activity and Moisture Determination


2nd grade students of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics of the School of Health Sciences, Istanbul Gelisim University, conducted water activity and moisture determination in the Food Chemistry and Analysis course.

Water makes digestion easier. Nutrients resulting from digestion are transported to our cells through water to perform their duties. We can also remove the harmful substances that are formed as a result of digestion. Water is also important and necessary in the control of body temperature.
 
The amount of water thrown from our bodies in various ways is about 2.5 liters. If the water discharged from the body is less than the amount of water taken, edema, the amount of water that we take to our body, and if it is less than the amount of water, the condition we call dehydration occurs.
 
The amount of water taken should be adjusted according to energy intake. For example, a person who consumes 3000-3500 calories should drink 3-3.5 liters of water. This is especially important for athletes who consumes high calorie. Normal healthy people are recommended to drink 8 glasses of water daily. Drinking tea, sodas do not replace water.
 
If urine color is dark yellow, this indicates that consumption of water is not enough. When sufficient water is consumed, the urine becomes colorless. Water is very important in the kindey stone formation or people who passes a kidney stone. Drinking 500 cc of water before going to bed prevents the kidney stone formation by reducing the urine density.
 
Stay under the sun excessively or sauna bath causes fluid lost and that loss should replace with water. The first thing that should be done in cases such as diarrhea and vomiting, where fluid loss is high, is to compensate the loss and to ensure water and electrolyte balance as soon as possible. Especially fluid loss in children should be regulate urgently.
