What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer, which is caused by uncontrolled proliferation of cells in breast tissue, is among the most common types of cancer in the world. As in the whole world, the incidence is very high in our country. The exact cause is unknown, but many genetic and environmental factors are considered to play a role in breast cancer. These factors can be grouped as changeable and irreversible risk factors.

Risk factors that cannot be changed include; environmental factors such as gender, age, early adolescence, late-onset menopause, and prior radiotherapy to the chest.Factors such as obesity, lack of adequate physical activity, use of long-term contraceptives, chronic alcohol use, and smoking are justifiable factors. Surgical treatment, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy are the mainstays of cancer treatment. Early diagnosis is crucial for successful treatment of breast cancer and to increase the chances of survival. For this, individuals should be informed about early diagnosis.

In addition to the treatment applied during and after the cancer process, the nutritional status of the person is also very important. In order to get rid of excess weight, a sufficient and balanced diet should be changed. On the other hand, adequate and balanced nutrition and weight loss in the treatment process can be prevented.

Cancer and Nutrition

Highly fiber-containing complex carbohydrates facilitate the removal of chemical and toxic substances from the body.Adequate consumption of fruits and vegetables containing anti-carcinogenic compounds will both strengthen the body's immune system and benefit weight control. Foods containing calcium and vitamin D should be consumed adequately.
Especially by the consumption of fruits and vegetables containing a large proportion of vitamins to the body; antioxidant agent which is formed as a result of metabolic activities or exposed to the external environment, which is called free radical and which leads to cell damage is ensured.

The consumption of trans-fatty and animal fat-containing foods should be reduced. With the fast-food style diet, much more fat is consumed than is required in the body. This type of nutrition causes obesity, which may adversely affect the course of the disease. Oils used in the daily diet should be rich in unsaturated fatty acid content, and vegetable oils such as olive oil, hazelnut oil and canola oil should be preferred. Although  many foods contain healthy fats ,too much consumption increase the calorie intake than should be avoided.
Breast cancer has been studied in order to determine whether smoking is associated with a variety of cancers, especially lung cancer, and it has been determined that smoking consumption is higher in breast cancer groups compared to control groups in many studies.

Physical Activity

Physical activity has positive, enhancing effects on the immune system. People who regularly engage in sports have a lower risk of developing cancer than those who do not spend time in sports.Especially Increasing the rate of physical activity of postmenopausal women has a positive effect on cancer prevention. The level of activity should be adjusted according to the individual. Non-personal heavy exercises should be avoided.

Food Additives

To extend the shelf life of the ready-to-eat products in daily life, to make them ready for consumption, to increase the demand for the product; some additives such as coloring, preserving, flavor, thickener, stabilizer and emulsifier are added. This kind of nutrition problem, which has become a way of life with the increase in the orientation of ready foods, increases the intake rates of these chemicals, which are mostly synthetic, and thus emerges as a threat to the formation of cancer.
