 New Approaches In Nutrıtıonal Scıences

As a result of long-term studies, it is well understood that people should be fed not only physically but also spiritually. When we understand and solve the reasons that lead us to consume foods in a holistic approach, the nutrition science will be better understood and will be improved. “Integrative Medicine” is an area that supports the mechanisms of self-renewal and uses these mechanisms for therapeutic purposes. When we look at the principles of integrative medicine, they take into account factors such as body, mind, soul.

Integrative Nutrition includes complementary nutrition and special diets, as well as dietary supplements for prevention of diseases. These are probiotics, prebiotics and functional foods such as polyphenols, catechins, chlorogenic acid, sulfur, antioxidants, EPA and DHA. In addition to supply the nutrients needed, these nutrients have many functions including protection from diseases, boosting the immune system and fighting cancer. At this point, the aim is not only to maintain health but also to improve it. First of all, they are effective in the prevention of many diseases by formation of a healthy microbiota. The efficacy and safety of these foods has been proven.

Cinnamon, garlic, ginger, grape seed extract, green tea, fish oil supplements are considered as essential dietary supplements in holistic nutrition approach. In addition, vitamin B, vitamin D, vitamin C, calcium, zinc and iron deficiency are emphasized in this approach.

Healthy weight gain is important factor in integrative nutrition since infancy. Obesity may be programmed in the early period, usually in infancy. For this reason, intervention may be required through childhood and adolescence. It is well established that being overweight or obese is a risk factor for many mental and physical comorbidities. Breastfeeding has a protective effect against childhood obesity.

According to this nutrition approach, dietary fiber, essential fatty acids, flaxseed, canola have a protective effect for cardiovascular disease. Probiotics has been also shown to regulate intestinal microbiata, and effective in prevention of many diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, autism, Alzheimer and Parkinson’s disease.

Prebiotics are oligosaccharides and polysaccharide carbohydrates that increase probiotic formation. The use of probiotic-prebiotic combinations is recommended for the prevention of obesity. Fecal transplantation is also being studied for the prevention of obesity.
