 The event on “Living with HIV” was held


The event on “Living with HIV” was held by Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) School of Health Sciences the Department of Nursing (TUR / ENG) with the participation of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Dr. Zeki Boztaş and Tekin Tutar, one of the founding members of Pozitif-iz Association.


In this event held on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 with the participation of Head of the Department of Nursing in Turkish Asst. Prof. Dr. Canan Örüklü, Head of the Department of Nursing (English) Asst. Prof. Dr. Funda Karaman, the faculty members of the Department of Nursing and the students of the Departments, who are the prospective nurses;
  • To be informed about the development, diagnosis, test methods and protection ways of HIV / AIDS which is preventable disease and
  • To realize the ways of transmission, the mistakes we know as correct are aimed, and
  • Issues such as raising awareness about AIDS and what can be done to change discriminatory perspectives are discussed.
The event started with the speech of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Dr. Zeki Boztaş. Boztaş explained the relation between the stages of the disease and the treatment to be applied and gave information about the drugs used, and stated the current effectiveness of HIV treatment. Specifying individuals at risk of possible HIV / AIDS, Dr. Zeki Boztaş explained the methods of prevention from disease and shared remarkable information about the ways of transmission and the mistakes we know as correct.

The event continued with the information about their support provided and consultancy services giving from Tekin Tutar, one of the founding members of Pozitif-iz Association. This association, which aims to empower HIV-positive people and their relatives physically, mentally and socially, also evaluates HIV / AIDS in terms of individual and public health, treats it as human rights, and carries out studies for contributing to reducing prejudice against disease and disseminating current and accurate information in the society.

Tekin Tutar talked about the global targets and shared the statistical information on the number of HIV-positive in the world and in Turkey in his presentation on "Stamping in the Context of Current HIV Knowledge, Discrimination and Human Rights Violations". Tekin Tutar, giving examples of the difficulties experienced by HIV-positive individuals, discussed the delays in the treatment-surgery process and gave information about the studies on the opinions of health professionals in this direction. He explained the changes and fears of newly diagnosed individuals in their lives due to social discrimination and notoriety with examples in the media.

After the presentations, students' questions were answered and the event ended with presenting the plaques of Dr. Zeki Boztaş and Tekin Tutar by Head of the Department of Nursing in Turkish Asst. Prof. Dr. Canan Örüklü and Head of the Department of Nursing (English) Asst. Prof. Dr. Funda Karaman.
