The event on "Child Development Profession and Ethics from Past to Present" was held
The event on “Child Development Profession and Ethics from Past to Present” of Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) the School of Health Sciences (SHS) the Department of Child Development was held with the participation of Director of SHS Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdullah Yüksel Barut, Prof. Dr. M. Meziyet Arı and Prof. Dr. N. Semra Erkan.
School Director Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdullah Yüksel Barut emphasized the importance of ethics, conscience, reading and reason in his opening speech. Barut named the health workers who malpractice their profession, ignore the ethical rules and do not question their conscience when they look in the mirror as Graduated Azrael.
After the speech of School Director Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdullah Yüksel Barut about Atatürk, Prof. Dr. M. Meziyet Arı started her speech with saying of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk “Children should be protected from all kinds of neglect and abuse, and they should be handled more special than adults in all circumstances.”
Stating about childhood in historical perspective, childhood in ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, childhood in the Middle Ages, Ms. Arı talked about the book named “Centuries of Childhood” (1962) about recognition of the characteristics of childhood and recognition of the characteristics of children different from adults and young people by Philippe Ariés.
Arı spoke of children in the Renaissance, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, and that the Convention on the Rights of the Children was approved on November 20, 1989 and that rapid developments in science and technology pushed children to loneliness and trapped them into virtual spaces.
By mentioning the developmental story of the child development profession in detail and child development programs in our country, the child development specialist is defined as professionals who are knowledgeable about the development of children, which constitute the basis of the society in every field, are competent in evaluating, monitoring/following and supporting the development and aiming to inform and guide the families and the society on these issues. Arı ended her speech by mentioning on the ethics and professional ethics of child development.
After Prof. Dr. M. Meziyet Arı’s speech, Prof. Dr. N. Semra Erkan started her speech by sharing some of her experiences in the professional life. Professional ethics, working areas of Department of the Child Development and efforts to introduce the child development profession in different institutions during her professional experience.
At the end of the event, Director of the School Asst. Prof. Dr. M. Meziyet Arı was given a plaque by Prof. Dr. N. Semra Erkan A. Yüksel Barut, Prof. Dr. N. Semra Erkan was also given a plaque by Head of the Department of Child Development in Turkish Asst. Prof. Dr. Nurten Elkin.
