Professor Dr. İsmail Hakkı Aydın met with the students of Istanbul Gelisim University
Professor Dr. Ismail Hakkı Aydın met with our students in the interview headed "An Interview on the Strange Coast of the Brain”. He shared his knowledge about brain, art, music and philosophy with students.
Neural plasticity is the ability of neurons in the brain to reorganize themselves to accommodate new experiences. Brain plasticity is affected by cognitive processes. The central nervous system has flexibility, so it can adapt to new auditory experiences. In the early years of life, some synaptic connections are created due to the development of auditory processing, while some connections are lost due to the lack of auditory stimulus. Atrophy and degeneration in spiral ganglia, decrease in spontaneous activity in auditory pathways, decreased synaptic activity in cortico-cortical and cortico-thalamic connections, and decrease in frequency specificity in nerve fibers occur in the absence of auditory stimuli. Early detection of hearing loss and early intervention have been shown to increase activation in cortical tissues. In this respect, we have organized an event called “Interpreting in the Weird Coast of the Brain”.
Professor Dr. İsmail Hakkı Aydın participated in the activity of our school and met with our students in the interview titled Weird Coast of the Brain. He held a presentation about recent studies and his own research in this field to students. Prof. Aydın, who has worked in different fields, shared his knowledge about brain, art, music and, philosophy with students. He stressed the importance of brain, intelligence and study for the world and the future. He answered various questions like: Why doesn't our brain get tired? Why should we keep our brains active? How to keep the brain active? Prof. Aydın, who has a book in many fields, ended the program by signing his books.
Our event started with the introduction our guest. Professor Dr. İsmail Hakkı Aydın is medical doctor, scientist, poet, writer and calligrapher. He was born in 1954 in Trabzon. He graduated from Atatürk University Faculty of Medicine. After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine, he completed his residency in Istanbul University, Istanbul Medical School, Department of Neurosurgery. He completed his microsurgery studies under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mahmut Gazi Yaşargil in Neurosurgery Clinic of the University of Zürich. He was appointed to the Chair of Neurosurgery Department of Atatürk University's Faculty of Medicine when he returned to Turkey in 1984. In addition to Switzerland; he conducted studies in Germany, France, England, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Yugoslavia, Canada, USA and Japan. He has developed a new surgical technique that has been used in brain vascular occlusion operations and accepted as a new procedure in the medical literature under his own name for the first time in the world in 1988. He received TUBITAK award in 1990 with this surgical technique. Professor Dr. İsmail Hakkı Aydın has managed 200 scientific studies in Turkey and abroad. Apart from the successes of our esteemed professor in medicine and brain surgery; he is interested in poetry, calligraphy, classical Turkish music, cartoons, philosophy of music, literature and theology. “Rabbim Beni Doktorlardan Koru”, ”Ah Bu Doktorlar”, ”Beynin Şifresi”, “Öfke Kontrolü ve Motivasyon”, ”Beyin Fırtınası”, Düşünce Sizsiniz” are among his published books. During the interview, he explained the cell, the intercellular connections and the nano technology. He particularly focused on the scientific properties of the brain cell that has been discovered so far. The connections of the cells in the brain with each other were emphasized. He explained definitions of science and learning, and their differences. In addition, he mentioned about the sources and developments in science. He answered the question about brain structure of children. Besides, he gave informations about Genetic Science. He mentioned about chromosomes, genes, genetic mutations, genetically transmitted diseases, cloning studies of reproductive cells, the number of genes in human, RNA and DNA. He provided detailed and updated information on these topics and encouraged the students to ask questions about these by motivating them. He stated that the expression: “when the information is loaded, the brain gets tired and the survival develops ”. He told them that it is a wrong statement. The brain does not recognize the boundary and area when making this storage. A person can learn and speak multiple languages at the same time, or a person can succeed in more than one and many separate areas. For example; a person can be the best lawyer of the world and the best engineer of the field at the same time. The brain also has room for all this information because the person does not have to limit himself.
After the presentation, professor answered the questions of the students and the other participants. The last part of the interview was interactive. Various questions were asked about how many cells are in the brain and how they are in relation to each other. İsmail Hakkı Aydın stated that every cell in the brain is in communication with each other. How fast is this information exchange? Sixteen operations divided by ten seconds. So the result is multiplied by itself sixteen times per second. So how do these cells form thoughts? İsmail Hakkı Aydın talked about the studies conducted on this subject with examples. Between each cell there are 19 nanometers width, 90 nanometer lenght tubes and networks, and communication takes place with them.
At the end of the interview, Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Aydın’s plaque was presented by the Director of the School of Health Sciences Asst. Prof. A. Yüksel Barut.
We are glad that Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Aydın shared this valuable presentation with us.
